Safe Homes Initiative

Safe Homes is a parent networking and support program brought to the DASD schools by Downingtown Communities that Care to strengthen families.  Our focus is to promote communication among parents and within families. We provide monthly tips, speakers, and parent discussion nights about a wide range of parenting interests.

Safe Homes was developed by the PA Liquor Control Board’s Alcohol Education Department and has been distributed all over the state for over 15 years, first implemented at DASD in 2014-2015 .  Its goal is to address certain high priority risk factors that have been identified by the PA Youth (PAY) Survey (results shared here), which is given to 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders every other year.

Last year, the focus was on preventing abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) through better communication and by sending our kids clear messages about the dangers of risky behavior (check out archived flyers here).  This year, the topics of conversation have been broadened to include:

  • mental health and anxiety issues
  • overscheduling and balancing stress levels
  • getting enough sleep and making healthy choices
  • setting boundaries for your kids (and sticking to them!)
  • and more!

We feel that by giving parents the tools to address some of the underlying issues that can lead to risky behavior later in life, we are enabling everyone to build stronger, healthier families.

Please look for flyers each month and emails/posts from your Safe Homes Champions, Kathleen Nine-Scott and Tara Haarlander, and keep an eye out for details on our upcoming Parent Discussion Nights.
