Peace. Love. Books. You’ll be feelin’ groovy at the Book Fair

BookFair2016Shamona Creek’s Scholastic Book Fair is an event that brings the books kids want to read right into the school. Please plan to visit the Feelin’ Groovy Book Fair in the Library to join in the reading excitement!

You can visit the Book Fair to make your selections from Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18.  The hours are:

  • Monday: 9:00 AM  – 5:30 PM
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday and Friday: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

For the family events on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Mrs. Carroll and her helpers will host fun photo opportunities. Be ready to use your phone to take pictures of kids and families! You might also wish to download the FREE Book Fair app in advance. It can help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs.

If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. The online Fair will be available through March 22. All orders are shipped free to Shamona Creek and delivered in a labeled bag to your child’s classroom to bring home.

As students browse or preview at the Book Fair, they have the option to complete a “wish list” to bring home. This is a way for them to convey information about titles and costs for your final consideration. Students are reminded that purchasing at the Book Fair is optional and at their parent’s discretion.

Helping hands are needed. Mrs. Carroll needs parent volunteers to help the students fill out their wish lists, locate the books of interest, and check out. If you are able to help, please email pcarroll@dasd.org.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

B-I-N-G-O is the GAME-O

Last year, as I sat with my family at our BINGO table, I came to the realization that I had lived a sheltered life. Before that night, I had only ever played BINGO one way.

Five in a row … BINGO!

While it was still exciting to try to be the first to claim a prize, my eyes were opened to the many other ways to play the game.

Four corners = BINGO! Big X = BINGO! Outside edges = BINGO!

For the second year, the SCHSA invites you to enjoy this fun-filled family event: PIZZA BINGO!

PizzaBingoDate: Friday, February 26
Time: 6-8 pm
Doors open at 6 pm.
Pizza served at 6:15 pm.
BINGO begins at 6:45 pm.

Important: This is a limited-seating, first-come, first-serve event. To reserve your table and pre-order your cheese pizza, you must complete the ORDER FORM and return it to school in an envelope marked “PIZZA BINGO” by Friday, February 19. All checks payable to SCHSA. (Last year, the house was packed.)

The BINGO event will support DASD’s “Read and Feed” food drive to help the Lord’s Pantry. Bring a non-perishable food item to BINGO night and you will receive a free raffle ticket!

A little competition among family and friends, along with dinner and raffles are sure to be memories your family will cherish forever.

  • BINGO card packs are $4 each and must be purchased in advance to reserve a table for your family.
  • Cheese pizzas will be $12 and also must be pre-ordered.
  • You are invited to bring a peanut/nut-free dessert for your family to share.
  • Water will be available for purchase that evening.

Your cards, raffle tickets and pizza orders will be waiting for you at the event.

Also, volunteers are needed for this event. If you are available, either share your availability on Sign-Up Genius or contact the organizers, Ann Durkin and Mary Sperling.

So, is everyone ready to get together for some classic family fun? BINGO!

Souper Bowl Friday: It will be M’m! M’m! Good!

soupsA sea of soup-filled crockpots and abundant baskets of breads will surround our faculty and staff on Friday, February 5. To thank Shamona’s teachers and staff member for all that they do for our children, parent volunteers are providing a warm luncheon for them to savor. This will be the second year that the Staff Appreciation Committee members have organized “Souper Bowl Friday.”

They will enjoy such comforting options as minestrone, French onion, black bean, chili, and chicken torilla, plus they will sop up their bowls with a selection of croissants, cornbread and rolls (traditional and gluten-free).

All soups and bread needs are accounted for, but there is still a way to help. Please visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4fa5a72fa7f49-souper1 for information.

Soup and bread donations from those who signed up should be brought to school on Friday, February 5 between 8:30 and 10:00 am. Prior to the start of school, the committee will collect it from you in the lobby. After that, they will be setting up in the Staff Lounge. Empty crockpots can be picked up in the lobby at the end of the day.

If you aren’t able to help this time, keep your eye on additional staff appreciation activities planned later in they school year.

District-wide Requirements for Parents who Volunteer at School

The following information is directly from the DASD website. For a link to the most up to date content, visit the Parents Section of the district website.

HelpingHandsGCDriveThank you to our current and future Downingtown Area School District volunteers. Without their help and support, we would be unable to provide our students with a great education and enjoyable school environment! To maintain a safe and healthy environment, background clearances are now mandatory for both staff and volunteers. Should you wish to volunteer in any of our DASD schools, please follow the instructions below.

1.     Pennsylvania state requirements for volunteers

School volunteer requirements are currently under review at the state level.   However, early in July, the General Assembly passed House Bill 1276 which effects clearances for volunteers and employees. The major changes are as follows.

    • Two of the volunteer clearances will be now be “free”‘
    • Volunteer clearances will now be good for 5 years

The two, free, state mandated certifications that DASD volunteers will need can be obtained by clicking on the links below.

2.     Additional DASD requirements for volunteers:

  • Proof of a recent Tuberculosis examination from your family physician
  • Annual completion of DASD Policy 916 – Volunteer Disclosure Form

1.     DASD Volunteer Disclosure Form

2.     DASD School Volunteer Policy #916 (Search for Policy 916 in the left column)

3.    Residents who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years

Those who have not lived in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the past ten years will also need to fill out a federal criminal history check in addition to the above documentation.

Federal Criminal History Report – Volunteer is responsible for cost of this report ($27.00)

Once you receive your clearances….

Please make one copy of each clearance for your records and send a copy to the school (s) you intend to volunteer with. These certifications will be good for the next 60 months and will travel with you as your child moves from one school level to the next.

Already have your clearances?

If a DASD school already has your clearances (and they are less than 60 months old), and proof of TB examination please fill out the annually required DASD Volunteer Disclosure Form.

Again, we thank you for giving us your time and energy.  Should you have any questions, please check out our FAQ on volunteers or contact Director of Public Information Pat McGlone at pmcglone@dasd.org.

Helping hands needed to do the “Shamona Sweep”

IMG_4238
It has been a long, hot summer, and there are a lot of beautiful flowers blooming at Shamona…and a lot of pesky weeds growing, too!
Please join us at the playground for the “Shamona Sweep” on August 25 (6-8 pm), August 26 (9-11 am) and/or August 27 (9-11 am) to tidy up the playground areas to make our school pleasant and inviting for our children.
The more “Sweepers” we have, the more fun and faster this will be!
Many thanks in advance for all your efforts!
Bring any tools you think may be helpful.  No experience needed!

The Countdown to the Spring Fair: Helpers, Tickets, Food and Used Books

Of all the family events that take place at the school, the Spring Fair is by far the event that the kids look forward to the most. It’s full of fun, games, prizes and treats. What’s not to love?

volunteerHelpers Needed
The students enjoy the Spring Fair tremendously, and they especially love seeing their teachers and the parents be part of the action. To make the night a success, the SCHSA needs parents to share an hour of their time that night. (We hate to sound desperate, but when you see the list you’ll notice we are seriously short on helpers. This is an event for everyone to get involved.) Please look for your class/assigned game and sign up for an hour. If your class is filled, select another available game and time that works best for your schedule. All help appreciated. Instructions & game room locations will be provided at the Volunteer Check In Table the night of the Fair.

Swim on over to the Book Fair Under the Sea

The Scholastic Book Fair will take place from March 20 through March 27.

The following information is being shared on behalf of the school library.

151000_book_fair_under_seaGet ready to explore an ocean of books at Shamona Creek’s Scholastic Book Fair! This year’s theme provides a perfect opportunity for SC Sharks to dive into reading with new and popular titles.

This annual event serves two purposes: to promote reading and to raise funds for the school library. It is always a memorable week for the students; their enthusiasm is ‘shark-tastic!’

We will have a “preview” day (no sales) for students on Thursday, March 19. Your child’s Wednesday folder will include The Scholastic Book Fair flyer and a note from the librarian with specific details for visiting and shopping. Parents are welcome to shop during school hours, including when their child is scheduled to be in the library. The Book Fair will be open after hours and there are several days with evening hours.

Book Fair Hours are:

  • Friday, March 20:  9:00 am-5:30 pm (teacher preview before school)
  • Monday, March 23:  8:30 am-5:30 pm
  • Tuesday, March 24:  8:30 am-8:00 pm

  • Thursday, March 26: 8:30 am-8:00 pm
  • Friday, March 27:  8:30 am-5:30 pm

If you are unable to attend the Fair, or if you wish to purchase additional titles or series not found at the Book Fair, you can shop online at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/shamonacreek.  Shamona Creek will receive credit for these purchases, and the books will be delivered to your child’s homeroom, with no shipping fee.

Parent Volunteers Needed
The Scholastic Book Fair is the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Parental assistance has always been important for its success. Will you consider lending a hand to help students preview, locate and purchase their selections?

You can volunteer at http://vols.pt/tPLJnK or email Mrs. Carroll at pcarroll@dasd.org.
