Twice the Souper Bowls = Twice the Giving

souperbowl

Coincidentally, two different programs share the same name this year. They aren’t connected, but both serve worthwhile audiences and could use parental support.

Souper Bowl (#1)

SCHSA Souper Bowl FridayOn FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, the SCHSA Staff Appreciation Committee will be kicking off the weekend for our staff with a SOUPER BOWL luncheon.

We are in need of some help from our amazing Shamona Creek parents:  soup, rolls or cash donations to cover costs of paper products and other expenses.  To contribute in any of these ways, please click here to sign up.

For more information, see the embedded flyer or click here if you are unable to view it.  We are looking forward to it and thank you, in advance, for your support!

Souper Bowl (#2)

In Mrs. Welsh’s January 14 email, she wrote that “5th GRADE STUDENTS across the district are united to provide support to a local food bank. They will be collecting items through FEBRUARY 6. All SC families are invited to support them in their efforts to help others in need. It is called the ‘Souper Bowl,’ but any of the following items will be put to good use.”

Needed goods: Spaghetti Sauce, fruits, vegetables, tuna, ham, chicken, beans, cereal, rice, pasta.

Wanted this Week: Gently Used Plastic Toys

Second-Chance-Toys

Through Friday, December 12, Shamona Creek’s Planet Patrol is collecting clean plastic toys to send to Second Chance Toys, a non profit that rescues gently used toys to give to children in need. This collection keeps plastic toys out of landfills.

Toy Drive FlyerPlastic toys can be dropped off in box in the front lobby of the school. Please make sure there are no small or missing parts, and that the batteries work. Place any loose pieces in a plastic bag taped to the toy.

Helping Hands Create Happy Hearts. Help Us Support Local Families in Need.

HelpingHandsGCDrive

The Helping Hands Committee is committed to providing assistance to families in need at Shamona Creek Elementary and the surrounding area with essential items for their household and their children. This program is successful thanks to the support we receive through our Home & School Association, faculty, community groups and families within our school community.

targetgiftcard1border2In addition to Gently Used Clothing Drives, Food Drives, and the 5th Grade Service Project, the committee will be helping Shamona Creek families in need during the holidays with gift cards to Target so that they can purchase items they truly need.

We are looking for monetary donations or Target gift cards to support these families. If you are thinking about making a donation this holiday season, please consider helping those in need right here at Shamona Creek.

We will be collecting the donations now  through December 16. Just send cash, checks made payable to “SCHSA,” or Target gift cards in an envelope with your child to school, addressed to “SCHSA: Helping Hands Gift Card Donations,” Donations can also be dropped off in the school office. Any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!

The gift cards will be distributed during the holidays and throughout the year when families need it.

If you have any questions, please contact Amy Krutsick at ARKruts@gmail.com.

Feeling Thankful and Showing Thanks … again

[THIS POST WAS INADVERTENTLY SENT ON SUNDAY WHEN I HIT THE ‘POST BUTTON TO SOON.  IT WAS INTENDED FOR RIGHT NOW. – LMH]

We wish you and your family an enjoyable Thanksgiving. We hope that no matter where you are or how you celebrate that you are surrounded by warmth, love and kindness.

This poem was shared with parents at the beginning of the year by Mrs. Carol Moore, and it is a lovely way to express the thanks we feel for the connection Shamona Creek has with its families.

UNITY
I dreamed I stood in a studio
and watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a child’s mind,
And they fashioned it where care.
One was a teacher; the tools he used
Were books, and music, and art;
One, a parent with a guiding hand,
And a gentle loving heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled,
With touch that was deft and sure
While the parents labored by his side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.
And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For this thing they had molded in the child
Could neither by sold nor bought.
And each agreed he would have failed
If he had worked alone,
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.

Have a wonderful weekend of giving thanks!

Are you a Black-Friday shopper…or an any-day shopper?

With the height of the holiday shopping season at its peak, the SCHSA wants to know:

Target Logo1.  Do you shop at Target?  Do you have a Target Red Card?  If so, please take a minute and register your Target Red Card in their Take Charge of Education program…and 1% of your purchases will come right on back to Shamona Creek!  Click here to register your Target Red Card on behalf of Shamona Creek!

Amazon Smile Logo2.  Will you be beating the crowds or shopping from the comfort of your own home this year with the help of Amazon?  With the Amazon Smile program, .5% of your purchases will be donated back to Shamona Creek.  Click here and then choose “Shamona Creek Home & School Association” as your charitable organization of choice.  Then when you shop on Amazon, use the URL:  smile.amazon.com.  It’s that easy!

GNTL3.  Are you a GIANT shopper?  Whether its all the time or just running in for the essentials, by registering your GIANT shopper card in their A+ School Rewards program online (choose Shamona Creek as your designee), every purchase you make at GIANT will result in EZ money for our Shamona Creek community.

I invite you to take 5 minutes right now to do all 3 of these things.  Let’s see how great an increase we can see in our participation in these programs before the new year.  Ready?  Go!

(Oh…and invite your friends/family to do the same…those loud annoying toys your older brother buys for your kids on Amazon may as well be good for something…besides giving you a headache.)

Happy Shopping!

Tonight is the night … well, technically tonight is the first night … but tonight is the night the Orchestra plays at the Barnes & Noble Bookfair fundraiser!

“With the school library approaching its 25th year, money is needed to replace a good number of well-worn titles,” writes Ms. Carroll.

So, if you are planning to join us tonight, the entertainment will begin at 6:30 pm. You will also be treated to story hour with Mrs. Welsh (see her post!), as well as Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Lynn, Mrs. Verbovszky, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. O’Brien.

And, while you are at Main Street Exton, plan to have dinner at Peace A Pizza between 5:00 and 9:00 pm. They will donate 20% of the proceeds to us. (Please bring the printed B&N flyer with you.)

Thursday will be an equally great night, as our school band takes “center stage” at Barnes & Noble. They will perform at 6:30 pm and the concert will last about 30 minutes. Story hour will feature Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Copeland, Mrs. Milano, Miss Czap, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Benner and Miss Figorski.

The book fair runs through Sunday, November 23.

Reminder: Home & School Association Morning Meeting

The Home & School Association typically hosts evening meetings, but we realize that there are parents whose obligations don’t allow them attend. Tomorrow at 9:30 am, we will have a daytime HSA meeting at Shamona’s cafeteria and we hope you can join us. No worries if you don’t have a babysitter, your young ones are welcome too.

We also recognize that there are parents who aren’t able to attend the daytime meeting. We will host evening meetings again later in the school year.

In the meantime, we encourage all parents to check out the minutes of past meetings on the website (CLICK HERE). We will post the minutes from the November 19 meeting online too.

Meeting reminders and other good dialogue can be found on the Shamona Creek Sharks – Parent Community Facebook group. All parents are welcome to join the group as another way to stay connected!

As always, the HSA Board welcomes your new ideas and appreciates your interest in volunteering for our various projects. LEARN MORE >

Reminder: Science Fair Registration Deadline

The registration is coming. To set the tone, here’s a poem.

Science Fair 2014My Project for the Science Fair
My project for the Science Fair
was absolutely cool.
I built myself a time machine
and showed it off at school.

Inventing it was not too hard;
I had a little aid.
My future self came back in time
and showed me how they’re made.
–Kenn Nesbitt

There is no expectation that anyone will make a time machine (although that would be awesome); however, there is an expectation that you will make the registration deadline!

Please email Peter and Sharon Alfinito at s.alfinito@comcast.net before Friday, November 14. More details and project deadlines will be provided after you connect with them.

Save the date for the Science Fair on January 29, 2015.
