B-I-N-G-O is the GAME-O

Last year, as I sat with my family at our BINGO table, I came to the realization that I had lived a sheltered life. Before that night, I had only ever played BINGO one way.

Five in a row … BINGO!

While it was still exciting to try to be the first to claim a prize, my eyes were opened to the many other ways to play the game.

Four corners = BINGO! Big X = BINGO! Outside edges = BINGO!

For the second year, the SCHSA invites you to enjoy this fun-filled family event: PIZZA BINGO!

PizzaBingoDate: Friday, February 26
Time: 6-8 pm
Doors open at 6 pm.
Pizza served at 6:15 pm.
BINGO begins at 6:45 pm.

Important: This is a limited-seating, first-come, first-serve event. To reserve your table and pre-order your cheese pizza, you must complete the ORDER FORM and return it to school in an envelope marked “PIZZA BINGO” by Friday, February 19. All checks payable to SCHSA. (Last year, the house was packed.)

The BINGO event will support DASD’s “Read and Feed” food drive to help the Lord’s Pantry. Bring a non-perishable food item to BINGO night and you will receive a free raffle ticket!

A little competition among family and friends, along with dinner and raffles are sure to be memories your family will cherish forever.

  • BINGO card packs are $4 each and must be purchased in advance to reserve a table for your family.
  • Cheese pizzas will be $12 and also must be pre-ordered.
  • You are invited to bring a peanut/nut-free dessert for your family to share.
  • Water will be available for purchase that evening.

Your cards, raffle tickets and pizza orders will be waiting for you at the event.

Also, volunteers are needed for this event. If you are available, either share your availability on Sign-Up Genius or contact the organizers, Ann Durkin and Mary Sperling.

So, is everyone ready to get together for some classic family fun? BINGO!

4 simple steps to put the “FUN” in FUNdraising at our school RUN

There are less than four days to go until the Fun Run, and we are only halfway to our goal. To make this first-ever character-building event impactful on our school community, we need all our families to take these four easy steps.
1. Before Friday, register your child at FunRun.com using the school code 879-585. Many thanks to the 370 out of 596 families who already created their child’s sponsorship page. This represents 62% of our families. Nice!
2. Before Friday, pledge your support for each lap your child runs. There are lots of children (129 out of the 370) who are registered but don’t have any pledges. Please consider being your child’s lead sponsor as he or she runs in support of the school.
3. Before Friday, invite others, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, relatives, neighbors, past parents, SC alumni and friends to make an online pledge for your child in their “run-a-thon” effort. (The FunRun.com website provides sample text and links that can easily be copied and pasted into an email. No door-to-door sales effort suggested or required.)
4. Finally, join the fun on Friday and cheer for all the children as they make a terrific effort to run 30-35 laps around the fun track.
  • October 23 @ 10 am – Grades 3-5 and AM Kindergarten
  • October 23 @ 2 pm – Grades 1-2 and PM Kindergarten
(Park at the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center’s parent lot, which is accessible from the entrance closest to our playground, not our bus loop.)
And lastly, if you’ve already completed steps 1, 2 and 3 … thank you! We respectfully ask you to share your enthusiasm for this activity with your Shamona Creek friends and encourage them to do the same, so that the kids can truly put the “FUN” in FUNdraiser!

Opportunity: Fun Run seeks family-owned Business Sponsors

BFR_3

One of the Home & School Association’s first big student activities of the school year will be a brand new event – the Sharks Fun Run! The fall, we will introduce this nine-day program to Shamona Creek’s students that will provide them with lessons in character building, leadership and fitness.

It is anticipated to be one of the SCHSA’s largest fundraisers of the year, allowing us to support the needs of the students and teachers throughout the whole year.

As we prepare for this early October program, we are making a late-summer request of those families who own small (or big) businesses…or those who work at a local company…or those whose friends/family outside the school have a business…and want an opportunity to market their company to a captive audience and support school students too.

Business logos will be displayed on the Fun Run t-shirts the students receive (t-shirts are like walking billboards outside of school), as well as on this SCHSA website all year long.

This sponsorship opportunity will introduce your business to the school family and show your support of the children, their education and their Shark Fun Run effort. (More details will come later about how the Fun Run will be organized with the help of an organization called Boosterthon.)

Click Here to read more (page 1) and to print the sponsorship form (page 2). Please forward this link along to anyone you think might be interested.

The deadline for sponsorships for this event is Friday, September 4, 2015.

Please email SCHSA President Kathryn Gute for information. (kathryn.gute@gmail.com)

A Little Friendly Summer Competition: The Box Top Challenge

IMG_2409

The Rebates + E-Z Money Committee has organized a summer Box Top competition. Sandwich-sized Ziploc bags were distributed to families the last week of May with a note about collecting Box Tops for Education all summer.

Families will collect the Box Tops in the given bags all summer long. The bags are due by Friday, September 11, 2015. The family that collects the most Box Tops will receive a $25 gift card to the store or restaurant of their choice.

Shamona Creek earns 10 cents for each specially marked General Mills box top submitted. Simply clip and save the box top square on the package. See the Box Tops for Education product list to help get you started.

The Countdown to the Spring Fair: Helpers, Tickets, Food and Used Books

Of all the family events that take place at the school, the Spring Fair is by far the event that the kids look forward to the most. It’s full of fun, games, prizes and treats. What’s not to love?

volunteerHelpers Needed
The students enjoy the Spring Fair tremendously, and they especially love seeing their teachers and the parents be part of the action. To make the night a success, the SCHSA needs parents to share an hour of their time that night. (We hate to sound desperate, but when you see the list you’ll notice we are seriously short on helpers. This is an event for everyone to get involved.) Please look for your class/assigned game and sign up for an hour. If your class is filled, select another available game and time that works best for your schedule. All help appreciated. Instructions & game room locations will be provided at the Volunteer Check In Table the night of the Fair.

Swim on over to the Book Fair Under the Sea

The Scholastic Book Fair will take place from March 20 through March 27.

The following information is being shared on behalf of the school library.

151000_book_fair_under_seaGet ready to explore an ocean of books at Shamona Creek’s Scholastic Book Fair! This year’s theme provides a perfect opportunity for SC Sharks to dive into reading with new and popular titles.

This annual event serves two purposes: to promote reading and to raise funds for the school library. It is always a memorable week for the students; their enthusiasm is ‘shark-tastic!’

We will have a “preview” day (no sales) for students on Thursday, March 19. Your child’s Wednesday folder will include The Scholastic Book Fair flyer and a note from the librarian with specific details for visiting and shopping. Parents are welcome to shop during school hours, including when their child is scheduled to be in the library. The Book Fair will be open after hours and there are several days with evening hours.

Book Fair Hours are:

  • Friday, March 20:  9:00 am-5:30 pm (teacher preview before school)
  • Monday, March 23:  8:30 am-5:30 pm
  • Tuesday, March 24:  8:30 am-8:00 pm
  • Wednesday, March 25: 8:30-5:30 pm
  • Thursday, March 26: 8:30 am-8:00 pm
  • Friday, March 27:  8:30 am-5:30 pm

If you are unable to attend the Fair, or if you wish to purchase additional titles or series not found at the Book Fair, you can shop online at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/shamonacreek.  Shamona Creek will receive credit for these purchases, and the books will be delivered to your child’s homeroom, with no shipping fee.

Parent Volunteers Needed
The Scholastic Book Fair is the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Parental assistance has always been important for its success. Will you consider lending a hand to help students preview, locate and purchase their selections?

You can volunteer at http://vols.pt/tPLJnK or email Mrs. Carroll at pcarroll@dasd.org.
