SHARK FUN RUN 2016

Shamona Creek FunRun 2016!

One of the Home & School Association’s first big student activities of the school year will be the  Sharks Fun Run!  The nine-day program at  Shamona Creek’s  will have the students learning  lessons in character building, leadership, fitness and how they can contribute to their community.

It is anticipated to be one of the SCHSA’s largest fundraisers of the year, allowing us to update and improve our playground  with New Swings and a Triple Shoot.  This funds raised also allow continued support to cover the transportation costs of field trips, and the needs of the students and teachers throughout the school year.

Apparently, this is the last week of school.

I swear that just yesterday I was buying a new 2016 calendar and making the list of things I was going to accomplish before my kids take over my days this summer. Let’s not talk about that list and the lack of check marks on it….

Instead, I wanted to share with you how you have contributed to just one more  incredible school year with your continued support of the Shamona Creek Home & School Association. During the 2015-2016 school year, with your generosity, your helping hands, and your support, the SCHSA was able to provide the following educational enrichment to our students and build & foster a sense of community among our families and staff through the following events & activities:

Back to School Night was a night to meet the teachers with entertainment with a Magic Math Show assembly

Family Fun & Food Truck Night brought our families together for an evening to catch up with old friends and meet new friends.

The NED Show taught our students to Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Best.

The Boosterthon Big World Recess & Shark Fun Run taught our students to embrace fitness through lessons on teamwork, curiosity, practice, humility, confidence and endurance.

The Barnes & Noble Book Fair showcased the importance of reading and our talented music program at Shamona  Creek while providing new books and materials for our Shamona Creek Library.

The Science Fair allowed all of our students to showcase their love of learning and science while gaining the confidence to research and present their findings to visitors.

The Fitfest for everyBODY taught our students about caring for their bodies for lifelong health & wellness.

Pizza Bingo was simply all about family fun!

The Variety Show merges the experience of performing arts with fostering confidence in our students for an afternoon that showcased more than 100 students across a variety of talents, including music, art, dance, comedy and so much more.

The Spring Fair is historically our biggest and best event of the year. Highly anticipated and never disappointing, this night brought together our Shamona Creek community of old and new for family fun and lifelong memories.

The Fifth Grade party is a final salute to our Shamona Creek student leaders as they wrap up their final year as a shark. This year, we hosted this event at Pennypacker Swim Club…and I am pretty sure that was a big hit!

In addition, the SCHSA also supported the following:

  • Compensation for transportation for all class field trips.
  • Several Staff Appreciation events, including Back-to-School Survival Kits for each teacher, a Thankful For You treat, the Souper Bowl, and Teacher Appreciation Week Lunch & Dessert Bar.
  • Ongoing maintenance and beautification of the curb appeal of our school including clean up, planting and mulching of many of the flower beds around the front of the school.
  • Collection, cutting and counting of – literally – thousands of Box Tops & Labels for Education resulting in one of our simplest ways to raise money for playground equipment and other necessary materials for our classrooms.
  • Collaborated with the district Safe Homes Committee to bring several Parent Discussion Nights to our parents on a variety of topics, including setting boundaries, mental health awareness & symptoms, healthy sleep habits and more.
  • Taking pictures throughout the year of all of our students, inside and outside the classroom, followed by organizing and creating the beautiful and amazing yearbook that your child will look back on year after year.
  • Offering a collection of Spirit Wear including shirts, sweatshirts, hats and more.

And, this is not all.  Through many of these events and other activities, the SCHSA has been able to raise enough money to, not only continue to support everything I have already shared above, but we provide grants and funds to every member of our staff to be able to completely supplement their classroom, curriculum and instruction, contributing to the ongoing excellence of Shamona Creek Elementary School.

Here is just a sample of how SCHSA has done this throughout the 2015-2016 school year:

  • Awarded more than $7,000 to our teachers for everyday classroom supplies, extra projects to supplement a lesson, or materials needed to improve instruction that might not otherwise have been possible with the budget provided to each school.
  • Over $5,000 in grants have been awarded to our staff for materials for classrooms, instruction & more.  A sample from this year includes:
    • Storage units for books during independent reading lessons
    • Literacy and math activity games and kits
    • Poetry book sets
    • Whisper phones
    • Message boards for parent communication
    • Dry erase boards for individual problem solving during instruction
    • Seat pockets, student mailboxes, book bins, reading seats
    • Classroom rugs and activity tables
    • Document Cameras
  • Approximately $1,000 in gift cards to local grocery and retail stores are purchased each year to be given to families in need within our Shamona Creek community.
  • Awarded $1,500 in cash scholarships to Shamona Creek alumni who are now DASD graduates heading off to college this fall.
  • In the fall, you will notice a brand new, state-of-the-art Gaga Pit on the playground, which the SCHSA will be contributing more than $3,000 toward the materials, permit and construction. It will be enjoyed by all students for years to come.

And, do you know what is the most incredible thing about all of this?  YOU!

All of these events, all of the support, all of the time, all of the smiles from our kids, all of the finishing touches on classroom lessons…all of itall of it…is all because of YOU!  Everything that the SCHSA does throughout the year is only possible through the support of our families and staff.  From the volunteers willing to send in a bag of ice for a teacher luncheon to the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the entire year to be sure that every single student is featured in the yearbook…I cannot begin to express my gratitude for your generosity. Whether you so generously supported our events as a sponsor or you sent in a needed item when requested or you showed up with your family to enjoy some Rita’s Water Ice at our Back to School Family Fun Night…whatever your level of involvement…I am incredibly grateful for you.

And, if you have read through all of this (first of all…thank you)…and you are thinking you’d like to get more involved in the SCHSA, please know that we are always looking for great minds and good people…just like you!  So, don’t ever hesitate to invest in your child’s experience here at Shamona Creek by finding something you are passionate about and lending your hand with the SCHSA.

I want to say Thank You to every single person who had their hand in making Shamona Creek everything that it is this year…and for making my job as Shamona Creek Home & School President for the past two years so incredibly rewarding!

I wish each one of you a safe and super fun summer with your families and look forward to catching up in the fall!!!

Spring Fair Fun on Friday (Ticket Info)

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Spring Fair this Friday, May 13 from 5:00-8:00 pm. The students know this is the premier event of the school year. There are lots of games to keep them entertained. This post details the cost of tickets for raffles and games on the night of the event.

Raffle Basket Tickets 
Raffle tickets available to purchase during event. Raffle drawings will take place at 7:45 pm on Friday. You DO NOT need to be present to win. 

1 ticket for $1.00
12 tickets for $10.00
25 tickets for $20.00

Game/Activity Individual Ticket Prices at the Door
4 tickets for $1.00
20 tickets for $5.00
40 tickets for $10.00

You will need game/activity tickets or a wristband for everything except food and drink purchases.

Wristbands at the Door
Wristbands will cost $20.00 at the door. As an alternative to individual ticket purchases, it allow for unlimited games per child (with some exceptions). See list below for games and ticket prices. 

*Wristband entitles wearer to 1 (one) Sand Art item, 1 (one) Face Paint, and 1 (one) Funky hair., (1) one photo booth, (1) one cupcake walk, and (1) one speed pitch. Additional tickets must be purchased after first visit.

**Wristbands are not accepted for the Candy Room, tickets only in the candy room & ticket cost is posted in Candy Room.

Reminder: Cradles to Crayons Donations

Outfit-Pack-Contents-new_0It’s Spring Greening season. Time to clean out the closets and recycle for a good cause.

All this week, Shamona Creek has been collecting items for Cradles to Crayons. The collection ends tomorrow, April 15. Please drop off new or gently used kids’ clothing, coats, and shoes. The items most needed are winter clothing, winter coats, sneakers, winter boots, winter hats, gloves, mittens, new socks and new underwear.

Your donation of new and like-new children’s items will support Cradles to Crayons’ efforts to provide children living in homeless or low-income situations with the essentials they need to thrive. Cradles to Crayons supplies these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

Peace. Love. Books. You’ll be feelin’ groovy at the Book Fair

BookFair2016Shamona Creek’s Scholastic Book Fair is an event that brings the books kids want to read right into the school. Please plan to visit the Feelin’ Groovy Book Fair in the Library to join in the reading excitement!

You can visit the Book Fair to make your selections from Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18.  The hours are:

  • Monday: 9:00 AM  – 5:30 PM
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday and Friday: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

For the family events on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Mrs. Carroll and her helpers will host fun photo opportunities. Be ready to use your phone to take pictures of kids and families! You might also wish to download the FREE Book Fair app in advance. It can help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs. 

If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. The online Fair will be available through March 22. All orders are shipped free to Shamona Creek and delivered in a labeled bag to your child’s classroom to bring home.

As students browse or preview at the Book Fair, they have the option to complete a “wish list” to bring home. This is a way for them to convey information about titles and costs for your final consideration. Students are reminded that purchasing at the Book Fair is optional and at their parent’s discretion.

Helping hands are needed. Mrs. Carroll needs parent volunteers to help the students fill out their wish lists, locate the books of interest, and check out. If you are able to help, please email pcarroll@dasd.org.

B-I-N-G-O is the GAME-O

Last year, as I sat with my family at our BINGO table, I came to the realization that I had lived a sheltered life. Before that night, I had only ever played BINGO one way.

Five in a row … BINGO!

While it was still exciting to try to be the first to claim a prize, my eyes were opened to the many other ways to play the game.

Four corners = BINGO! Big X = BINGO! Outside edges = BINGO!

For the second year, the SCHSA invites you to enjoy this fun-filled family event: PIZZA BINGO!  

PizzaBingoDate: Friday, February 26
Time: 6-8 pm
Doors open at 6 pm.
Pizza served at 6:15 pm.
BINGO begins at 6:45 pm.

Important: This is a limited-seating, first-come, first-serve event. To reserve your table and pre-order your cheese pizza, you must complete the ORDER FORM and return it to school in an envelope marked “PIZZA BINGO” by Friday, February 19. All checks payable to SCHSA. (Last year, the house was packed.)

The BINGO event will support DASD’s “Read and Feed” food drive to help the Lord’s Pantry. Bring a non-perishable food item to BINGO night and you will receive a free raffle ticket!

A little competition among family and friends, along with dinner and raffles are sure to be memories your family will cherish forever.

  • BINGO card packs are $4 each and must be purchased in advance to reserve a table for your family.
  • Cheese pizzas will be $12 and also must be pre-ordered.
  • You are invited to bring a peanut/nut-free dessert for your family to share.
  • Water will be available for purchase that evening.

Your cards, raffle tickets and pizza orders will be waiting for you at the event.

Also, volunteers are needed for this event. If you are available, either share your availability on Sign-Up Genius or contact the organizers, Ann Durkin and Mary Sperling.

Read and Feed: Families Helping Families in Need

DO YOU KNOW…Chester County is the 24th wealthiest county in the United States.

BUT, DO YOU REALIZE…Nearly one-quarter (24.9%) of Chester County residents earn below the poverty level. For a family of four, that’s an earning of just $24,250 per year.

Recognizing that it is important to help Chester County families in need have access to food, the Downingtown Area School District is sponsoring a district-wide non-perishable food drive to support The Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. The Lord’s Pantry serves the emergency food needs of residents in Downingtown, Exton, Lionville, or the Downingtown School District. Celebrating its 50th year of operation, it distributes 10,000 lbs. of food per week to 700 families, and it relies heavily on community food drives to do so.

All the schools in the district have taken on a different need. Shamona Creek will be collecting food for “Pasta Night” dinners. The school is asking its families to donate the items requested below and to involve their pastachildren in the process. The school library will be the drop-off center for food donations. The students can participate by personally delivering the food to the library, which will then be stacked in the windows to visually show the impact the community can make when individuals work together.

READ
Between now and Thursday, February 25, on your child’s scheduled library day, please send along a food item. No actual reading is required for this project. READ is just a way to remember the day to send in food and where to bring it. (Food donations will be accepted on any day in the school’s 6-day cycle, not just your child’s library day.)

FEED
Your child should have three scheduled visits to the library during the Read and Feed food drive. Here is a list of the food items requested during each cycle.

  • First cycle: Donate pasta, such as spaghetti, elbow, penne – whatever you choose that would be served with sauce
  • Second cycle: Donate macaroni and cheese (boxed)
  • Third cycle: Donate parmesan cheese or canned fruit (peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, etc)

Fifth grade helpers
District fifth graders typically organize a “Souper Bowl” food collection for the Lord’s Pantry during this time of year. This year, however, they will assist with the Read and Feed effort by collecting and stacking food in the library. Mrs. Carroll will be thankful for their assistance.

“Your participation in our Pasta Night Food Drive will go a long way to help families, the elderly and the disabled,” writes Mrs. Carroll.
